Air Fryer Tater Tots

Air Fryer Tater Tots are the easiest way to get perfectly golden, crispy tots without turning on the oven. All you need is a bag of frozen tater tots and about 15 minutes, and you’ve got the ultimate snack or side dish.

Frozen Tater Tots in Air Fryer

Ana Frias Portrait

Frozen tater tots in the Ninja air fryer come out crispy on the outside, fluffy in the middle, and ready in about 15 minutes. No waiting for the oven to heat up and no soggy tots. All you need is a bag from the freezer and a basket.

They’re my favorite side for burger night, and they’re just as good next to chicken tenders, a grilled cheese, or a fried egg in the morning. Leaving the oven free for the rest of dinner is a nice bonus.🩷 xo, Ana

How To Make Them

A pile of frozen tater tots on a wire cooling rack.
  1. Preheat. Run your Ninja at 400°F (200°C) for about 3 minutes. A hot basket gets the crisping going from the first minute.
  2. Load the basket. Tip the tots straight from the bag. Don’t thaw them. One layer only. A few touching is fine, but piling them up means pale, steamy tots.

  1. Shake halfway. At the 7-minute mark, pull the basket and give it a good shake. This is what gets them evenly golden all the way around.
  2. Finish and season. Once they’re crunchy when you tap one with tongs, they’re done. Salt them immediately so it sticks. I also like to sprinkle with garlic powder for extra flavor.

Ana’s Recipe Tips

  • Want more flavor? Give the tots a light spray of oil before cooking and add garlic powder, smoked paprika, or Tajín. The oil helps the seasoning stick.
  • Cooking a big batch? Work in rounds and keep the first batch warm in a bowl loosely covered with foil. Give it 1 minute back in the air fryer before serving to re-crisp.
  • Every Ninja runs a little differently. Smaller models run hotter. Start checking at 12 minutes the first time you make these.

Storing and Reheating

Fridge: Keep leftovers in a covered container for up to 3 days.
Freezer: Skip it. Cooked tots turn soggy and mealy once they’re refrozen.
Reheat: Air fry at 360°F (180°C) for 6 to 7 minutes until crisp again. The microwave works in a pinch, but they’ll come out soft.

What to Dip Them In

Ketchup is the classic, but try BBQ sauce, honey mustard, ranch, garlic aioli, cheese sauce, hot sauce, or chipotle mayo. Chipotle mayo and ketchup are my picks!

I like to serve them with Air Fry Chicken Tenders or Air Fryer Tilapia to add protein to my meal.

FAQs

Why are my tater tots still soggy?

The basket was probably too full. Shake them and cook 1 to 2 more minutes, keeping an eye on them so they don’t burn. Next time, cook in smaller batches.

Are tater tots gluten free?

Many brands are, including Ore-Ida, which labels its tater tots gluten free. Recipes change, so always check the bag for a gluten-free label.

Can I cook them longer for extra crunch?

Yes, a couple of extra minutes gives you darker, crunchier tots. Push it too far and they dry out inside, so add time 1 minute at a time.
